Ya, there are a fair number that are light brown. Probably about a third of the black bears I see in Alberta aren’t black. Subjectively it seems it’s more common here than in Ontario where almost every black bear I saw was black.
I love this shot. Bears are such powerful creatures, but I like the way that you have managed to capture a softer, almost tender side to this one. How many dandelions does it take to satiate a bear that size?
Glad you like it Mike. This bear seemed to be comfortable enough to show its character in front of people. It was hard to get a picture of him without his tongue out! I’m not sure if anyone has actually figured out how many dandelions it takes to satisfy a bear…the adults seem to almost always be eating!

Great picture! I took a similar picture of a Black bear some years ago in Jasper National Park. I found the big contrast between the huge dark bear and the light green grass quite challenging!
What a great pose! That is a nice colouring on the bear as well. Have you seen many that are that light around your area?

Thanks! I will check out your site and get back to you soon.
Great job capturing the emotion in the bear Owen. I think your post text is fitting as to what the bear is thinking.

Thanks Thomas and I’m glad to hear you have also had the chance to photograph these bears in Alberta.
